1 0 and Blitz Chess Party in Pennsylvania!

Come meet the faces behind the kibitzing!  1 0 players haven't had the chance to fight it out over-the-board in the U.S. yet, and there have been no East Coast FICS gatherings.  This July, let's change all that!

Location: Harrisburg State Hospital Grounds, Pavillion, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, U.S.
When: weekend of July 29/30
Facilities: Open Pavillion, 15 Picnic Tables, 2 Outdoor Grills, Men's/Women's Restrooms, Ice Machine, Running Water

Players will provide their own sets, boards, clocks, food, and lodging.  We'll play as many games of 1 0 as we can manage (longer time controls are okay too), and maybe hold for-fun tournaments, lectures, or clock-simuls if anyone wants to do the preparation.

Please address questions and suggestions to afw or Obliviax on FICS.

--[ 9:02 PM EST - Aug 3 ]--

Thanks to everyone who came and helped out!  I hope this works out as well next year, and I encourage anyone considering hosting HS2K+1 to go through with it.

Pictures are up, with more to follow when I return to school in 2 weeks (with videos!).

--[ 11:35 PM EST - July 27 ]--

This will be the last update before the festivities!  People will be showing up throughout the morning, so we'll do a "formal" opening when we think enough people have arrived.  We'll be at the playing site at 10 AM until either they kick us out (sorry, I have no input on whether they'll do this or not!  but it will be late if they do) or until everyone is too tired (that won't happen).  Sunday morning will also open at 10 AM unless everyone agrees on later.  If you need to get a message across, try the message board here or afw on FICS.  See you there!

Remember [digital!] clocks, boards, and sets!

--[ 12:50 PM EST - July 22 ]--

afw provided directions from Ohio/Pittsburg.  Start around step 7 or 8 if you're coming to Harrisburg from another direction.

Also take a look at the Harrisburg State Hospital site map there.  It's too big to print but I couldn't scale it down without losing all legibility.

--[ 1:25 AM EST - July 18 ]--

A message board is now available to arrange rides and to find others to share your hotel room, or any other discussion related to this event!

Also, BLITZ players are now being invited as well as the 1 0 crew, so invite all your chess friends along!  We'll still target the faster end of blitz (we'll try to do a 3 0 tourney, e.g.) but there will be plenty of skittles games for non-lightning players.

--[ 11:04 PM EST - July 16 ]--

Hotel prices are up in cost order.  If you don't have someone to share a room with and cut costs let Obliviax know and I'll get your name down in case someone else comes along.  afw says bringing a tent and camping in the field near the site may be possible as well (but this is at your own risk)!

--[ 10:08 PM EST - July 1 ]--

Under four weeks left!  afw reserved our playing site - the Harrisburg State Hospital outdoor pavillion - for both Saturday and Sunday.  Note that there was no charge for the site, so we won't have to hit you for donations!  But remember to bring a board, set, clock (digital preferred!), any food, drinks, or anything else you want.  There is a grill and an ice box at the site.

Here is a listing of nearby hotels.

Some of us might drive up Friday night to play some games wherever we're welcome (coffee shops or public tables are my guesses).

--[ 10:27 PM EST - June 28 ]--

The weekend has been chosen!  afw has reserved a space for us on Saturday, July 29th, and is looking into getting Sunday as well.  The playing grounds consist of an outdoor pavillion with electricity, a grill, and ample parking nearby.  These maps provide a rough estimate of where we'll be until better directions are provided:

View players' preferences for the party's date, HERE.   Also, MrMnM can't make it, and tone would like to be an honorary memorial guest, in the name of HS.

From afw's notes:

6: HS Party - finger Obliviax. This event is in no way an related to FICS. My current status on the party - currently seeking a place that is well lighted such as a cafeteria from a local university center. I have yet to come up with th actual place or date, however I can say that this event will be after the World Open (week of July 4) and before ajedrez's BugHouse gathering in San Jose, CA.
7: HS Party potential loacations: Irem Temple Shrine Cafeteria, 2801 N.3rd St, Hbg, Pa - $300 for the room and $15/hr for a monitor, approx time 11:00am to 10:00pm total cost= $450.00/40 people = $11.25/person. Other Locations pending: Harrisburg Community College Cafeteria or Gymnasium, 1 HACC Drive, Hbg, Pa. If you would like some map and travel information for Harrisburg Pennsylvania, go to: http://www.mapquest.com
8: I now have to find a date for this event, it can be: 7/15-16, 7/22-23, 7/29-30, or 8/5-6. -Another decision to make is whether the tourn will be a one or two day event. -Lodging may also be a concern for people, I will also work on that at a later time.
